A Slice Of Heaven – Whites Bay – Rarangi, New Zealand
Our next stop in New Zealand took us to the Marlborough Sounds; an area of sea drowned valleys (as Wikipedia would say) or small coves, many accessible only by boat. We could have taken a quick 30 minute drive to get here, but that would be too easy. Instead, we took the Port Underwood pass, a mostly unpaved, narrow, windy road overlooking the ocean and valleys, with some serious cliffs and drops. Kevin drove…slowly, while Christine occasionally utilized the “oh shit” handle on her side of the car. The drive, although sometimes scary, was worth it. The views were gorgeous, and we found a few small beaches to stop and enjoy the views. At Whites Bay, we joined a few locals using tiny nets to collect small fish, crabs, and shrimp from the rocks for them to add to their home aquarium. The drive ended up taking over 3 hours, but it was worth the detour!
