Can I Help Ewe? – The Southern Scenic Route – Mokotua, New Zealand

New Zealand is home to about 30 million sheep, and about 5 million people.  Believe it or not, the sheep to person ratio is an actual government statistic.  In the eighties it was a staggering 22 to 1 ratio; today it is a meager 6 to 1.  Needless to say, we’ve seen heaps of sheep on this trip.  Probably a few million, at least.  Most of them keep to themselves.  Many will “baa” back at you.  Few will let you get within 10 feet of them.  This particular flock was as curious of us as we were of them.  When we approached the fence, instead of running away, they ran in our direction and crowded the fence.  Not a “baa” was made.  Pictures were taken in silence, then we parted ways.  It was a Close Encounter of the Herd Kind.
